Singing Time

This year we are focusing on taking a full 20 minutes on Sunday for Singing Time so the children can learn the primary songs together.

From the Sharing Time outline:
The purpose of music in Primary is to teach the children the gospel of Jesus Christ and help
them learn to live it. Primary songs make learning more enjoyable, help children learn and
remember gospel truths, and invite the Spirit into Primary.

Some of the greatest lessons taught in Primary are taught through music. “Music can increase children’s understanding of gospel principles and strengthen their testimonies” (TNGC, 174).

Children of all ages and abilities respond to music and enjoy participating in musical activities. The rhythms of the songs help children remember what they sing and the message of the words.

Sister Michel will keep us updated throughout the year on which songs the children will b
e learning for the Primary Sacrament Meeting Presentation at the end of the year (probably November). You can review these songs at home with your children so they can have them written upon their hearts. Music and songs will stay with children often long after a particular lesson is forgotten.

In January we learned a new song, As A Child of God, by Jancie Capp Perry. MP3s can be found at:

Also, the sheet music is on page 28 of the
2012 Outline for Sharing Time
A simplified version is printed in the January 2012 Friend magazine on page 7.
